Rice has always been grown in Saint Germain. Technical advances mean that rice can now be grown mechanically like other cereals, but fifty years ago rice plants were still transplanted by hand in flooded rice fields. This gîte was once home to Spanish seasonal workers, specialised in this work, who came to work in the Camargue every year.
